Show excerpt for protected post not working with Restrict Categories

I’m using the technique referenced in this post to show excerpts for posts in the loop and it works well.

Restrict category, display content teaser?

But if I use category restriction it no longer works. Is this the expected outcome?

I did purchase the plugin (actually got charged twice since first purchase didn’t appear to work so I switched to Paypal 🙁 )
