Menu Item Visibility Control
—
by
Hello,
I have used the “Menu Item Visibility Control” plugin in conjunction with the “Groups” plugin for years. However, it seems that the Plugin is no longer supported and has been reported as a major security Issue.
Is there any way to use a custom function to hide or show Menu items based on capabilities? I looked for other plug-ins, but they all use WordPress roles…
Thank you in advance,
Uwe

You’re welcome Uwe,
Normally you should only need to set menu-item group restriction, but perhaps you should ask the developers for the necessary details on this part.
Cheers
Thank you, the If Menu did the trick,
Regarding the migration guide, it applies to posts, right? Is there anything special I should do for menu items?
Hi Uwe,
Sorry to hear that the third-party plugin you’ve been using is no longer maintained.
If you use custom functionality to cover this case, you would end up in building a clone of the plugin you’ve been using, around the capabilities model which is discouraged(not deprecated though) in Groups plugin, in favor of the new model using group-based restrictions.
If I were you, I would contact the developer and ask if they plan to release another version, otherwise you have at least one alternative found in the WordPress repository, https://wordpress.org/plugins/if-menu/, which according to its description it integrates with Groups.
Finally, you can migrate Groups and your restrictions to the groups-based model, following the guide we have here:
and create groups for your capabilities according to the instructions.
Kind regards,
George
