Cookie Issues – Displaying wrong info…sometimes.
—
by
Hi Guys – I still have random people who click an affiliate link and it shows the wrong affiliate information on the page. For example, they’ve clicked on the link ending in ?fund=54 but referrer_display info is showing for ?fund=48. I can’t reproduce it. Both links work fine for me and i can go back and forth between the two links with no problem in the same tab of the same browser. And other people are using the links correctly because I can see orders coming in crediting those same affiliates.
I had emailed you previously thinking that SiteGround’s SG Optimizer cashing plugin caused the issue. When I disabled it, the problems seemed to go away. You indicated that I should probably turn it on but disable cashing on any pages that included your code. I did that, but the problems came back. So I disabled SG Optimizer again and the problem seemed to correct itself in a few days.
However, we just had another person experience the problem and it’s been weeks since I disabled the cashing plugin. I’m at a loss.
I’m wondering if cookies aren’t being accepted correctly on their browsers. Do you think it would help to add a cookie consent plugin and/or do you have a recommendation or advice about the settings before I install one?
Thanks!

Hi Erica,
Thanks for creating the affiliate account, I used it and took a screenshot.

The stored cookie is correct as you can see and has the same value as the affiliate id coming from the URL and therefore I think that the issue was temporary, or the person reporting it simply didn’t use the correct URL.
Kind regards,
George
BTW – I don’t believe I have any other caching plugins installed. And the issue seems to be very random. Any insight is great. And I did just update my Affiliate Plugin so maybe that will help as well.
Hi George – I made you an affiliate account. Your username is GeorgeItthinx and you can reset your password to whatever you want.

Hi Erica,
Welcome back to our support forum.
The most possible reason for the issue you describe can occur if there is a caching feature running at the moment on your site. Apart from SG Optimizer any other caching plugins can have the same effect on the page and the shortcode itself.
Regarding the browser, there are only two possibilities, the cookies being accepted and the cookies not being accepted but according to your description the cookie value is not correct. If the client browser didn’t accept cookies at all then you wouldn’t see any affiliate id stored and the shortcode wouldn’t display anything. Since you cannot reproduce the issue then it’s a bit tricky for my side to recommend what should be done or suggest solutions since I’m not aware of the issue itself.
Can you please share an affiliate URL to your site, or even better create an affiliate account using my email george at itthinx dot com?
Kind regards,
George
